The Left party in Sweden has expressed "deep concern" because of the recent political developments in Turkey. In a press release the party says that "Almost every day Kurds and their representatives gets arrested, the arrests are arbitrary and have no legal basis. Turkey is increasing its pressure on political active Kurds and has started to even arrest the Kurdish representatives in Europe. On Dec 15, the BDP `s representative in Europe, Faruk Doru, was arrested in Germany".
Due to the recent alarming events the Left party’s EU MP Mikael Gustafsson, have initiated a meeting with Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) European office in Brussels.
Speaking about it Mikael Gustafsson said that "It is sad that the EU that always have such a nice claim to defend human rights and democracy are mute when it comes to Turkey's attacks on free speech. Condemn Turkey once a year with harsh words does not do many knots in a solution of the democratic problem in the country. What is happening in our environment affects us and what we do affects the world around us. Carl Bildt is Turkey's voice in the EU, we’ve have given up on him, but there are still politicians in Europe who are passionate about democracy and human rights, it is time that these rises and puts pressure on Turkey. The Kurds have said that 2012 will be years of peace, let's give them a helping hand in this peace process".
The meeting on BDPs Office for Europe will take place on February 25 and besides Mikael Gustafsson, Berit Dahlstrom, political coordinator for the Left party in Brussels and Yekbun Alp, the International Committee Left party in Uppsala will also attend to it.
