Medeni Yıldırım's brother sentenced to prison for insulting Erdoğan

Mehmet Yıldırım, brother of Medeni Yıldırım who was murdered by Turkish soldiers during a protest against the construction of a military outpost in Amed's Lice district, received a prison sentence for "insulting" Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

19-year-old Medeni Yıldırım was killed on June 28, 2013, in the Kayacık (Hêzan) neighborhood of Amed's Lice district during a protest against the expansion of Turkish military bases.

The final hearing of the case, in which Yıldırım's 18-year-old brother Mehmet Yıldırım stood trial for "insulting the President", was held at the Diyarbakır 4th Criminal Court of First Instance.

Yıldırım was sentenced to 1 year and 2 months in prison for insulting the Turkish President on his Twitter account. Yıldırım stated that the account in question was not his, and that he did not know who was using it.

Yıldırım's lawyer, Serdar Çelebi, said that there was no clear evidence in the file proving that the social media account in question was used by his client.

The court judge found Yıldırım guilty, claiming that the crime of "insulting the President" was committed, and decided to postpone the announcement of the sentence.
