Memorial demonstration for Kasim Engin in Lavrio

In the Greek region of Attica, inhabitants of the Lavrio refugee camp commemorated Kasim Engin with a demonstration. The member of the PKK executive committee died in a Turkish air attack on Southern Kurdistan in late May.

In Lavrio, Greece, a demonstration has taken place in memory of Kasim Engin. Engin, whose civil name was Ismail Nazlikul, was a member of the Executive Committee of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and died on 27 May in a targeted Turkish air attack on the South Kurdistan region of Bradost. Protests have been taking place in many places since his death was announced by the PKK on Monday.

The Kurdish youth organisation Tevgera Ciwanên Şoreşger (TCŞ) called for a demonstration in Lavrio, a community in the Attica region. Hundreds of people who live in the refugee camp of the same name, marched through the town of Lavrio, which is about 60 kilometres southeast of Athens, behind a banner bearing the image of Kasim Engin and the inscription "The martyrs are immortal" under a sea of red-yellow-green flags. Slogans like "Long live the resistance of the guerrilla" and "No life without Öcalan" resounded through the main street.

The demonstration ended with a commemoration ceremony in the courtyard of the camp. An activist from TCŞ and a representative of the Kurdistan People's Council held speeches about the life of Kasim Engin, followed by a short film about the work of the long-time PKK member.
