Memorial event for Seyit Evran in Brussels

In Brussels, members of the free Kurdish media commemorated their deceased colleague Seyit Evran, a Kurdish journalist and revolutionary who left an invaluable legacy with his decades of work.

Colleagues from the free Kurdish media organized a memorial service in Brussels for ANF correspondent Seyit Evran, who died of a heart attack in Rojava. The event room was decorated with pictures of Abdullah Öcalan and flags of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). The Kurdish anthem Ey Raqip was played and a video clip with footage from the life of Seyit Evran was shown.

Journalist Hüseyin Dağ gave a speech about the youth years of his long-time friend and colleague and described his early days in the Kurdish liberation movement. Another speaker was Remzi Kartal, co-chair of Kongra-Gel, who said that Seyit Evran's life of struggle had significantly shaped the history of free Kurdish media. "He started in the 1990s and fought until the end. With his camera he travelled to all four parts of Kurdistan. With his pen, he brought out the truth. He himself once said that sometimes only his pen counted and at other times only his gun. Seyit Evran passed away very early. In order to correspond to the struggle of his people, he spent his whole life uncovering the unknown and telling about the history of Kurdistan and the PKK, about Abdullah Öcalan and the guerrillas. It is up to us to keep his fighting spirit alive."

Other journalists shared their memories of Seyit Evran. Aysel Avesta said: "With his 33 years of revolutionary struggle, his journalistic work and his extensive research, he has left us a great legacy. It should also not go unmentioned how he thought about women's liberation and how appreciative he was of women. His heart was full of love for Kurdistan, with all its different aspects. He carried this love with him and left a part of it everywhere."
