Mersin students arrested before Newroz celebration
Mersin police has detained many students before the Newroz celebrations.
Patriotic and democrat students at Mersin University have been targeted by the police operation: ten members of a folklore performance group were taken into custody before the Newroz celebration scheduled for today.
The students have been taken into custody early on Monday morning as a result of a police raid on the building of Student’s Union of Mersin University (MED-DER). The raid targeting students of the folklore group was carried out within the scope of Newroz preparations.
Police, searching the union building inch by inch, seized a number of books, tapes and cds within the scope of the operation. Some other Kurdish students were also taken into custody as a result of police raids in many cafes in the university area.
On the other hand, it has been reported that a group of nationalist students will also hold Çanakkale Commemoration activities at the university on 19 March.
