Metal workers to go on strike

After the disagreement on collective labor agreement negotiations between United Metal Workers Union (Birleþik Metal-Ýþ) and Turkish Union of Metal Industries (MESS), unions have decide to go on strike.

The union representatives will also keep hanging the strike decision in workplaces of BAÞÖZ, ÇEMAÞ, ÇÝMSATAÞ (Anatolian branch), PRYSMIAN (Bursa Branch), AKSAN, REMAS (Ist. No. 1 Branch) and RSA (Ist. Branch No.2). Strike decisions had been hung in workplaces of BOSAL, ARFESAN, AREVA and DEMÝSAÞ on 10th February.

Making a statement upon the strike decision, a DISK union's General President Adnan Serdaroðlu had previously said the followings; “The collective labor agreement will be the initial phase of this struggle. And people in crowds will reveal a strong resistance against these attacks with the sum of standing side by side”.

Serdaroðlu, European Metalworkers' Federation General President Renzo Ambrozetti and General Secretary Peter Scherrer and Bakert factory workers had gathered in Sabri Yalim Park walking 7 miles after hanging the strike decision in the factory.

Speaking here, Serdaroðlu reminded putting up the strike decision in Bakert Çelikkord Industry and Trade Inc., noting that two unionists from European Metalworkers' Federation came to support union workers.

European Metalworkers' Federation General Secretary Peter Scherrer, who came Turkey to give their support to union workers, expressed that they are proud to support the struggle on behalf of 5.5 million metal workers in Europe they represent.

Scherer told that they give a struggle against unsecured working conditions coming with the effects of economic crisis and subsequently, emphasizing laws against working conditions and employees and retirees are intended to be applied in Europe as well.

Scherer said the followings; “As you may remember, big protest actions were staged in France. The reason was that bosses tried to burden the crisis on workers. But we once again repeat that the price mustn’t be paid by workers but by the bosses, governments and companies themselves”.

“Reemployment” decision for 169 workers of KARDEMÝR

Separately, with a decision taken from 4th to 11th February, Karabük Labour Court decided on reemployment of 169 workers who were dismissed from Karabük Iron and Steel Plants (KARDEMÝR) Inc. The Labour Court will handle the situation of 99 workers on 18th February and 28th February.

According to the daily Evrensel newspaper, 268 workers were dismissed so far, while the Labour Court on 28th February gave the first reemployment decision for 29 workers who were dismissed on 18th June 2010.

The court concluded that the workers were dismissed due to union activities, deciding on the payment of 12 gross, 4 net salaries and other social rights in the event of not being reemployed within the legal period.
