Road controls and searches started to increase at military and police check-points between Hakkari, Van, Bitlis and Ağrı.
Vehicle and body searches are carried out 24 hours a day at the check-points near gendarmerie stations between Hakkari, Van, Bitlis and Ağrı. The soldiers thoroughly stop and search the vehicles, and check the identity of drivers and passengers. These check-points, people say, have turned into torture.
Depin, Yeniköprü, Bebleşin and Albayrak located between Hakkari and Van, Buzlupınar road checkpoint between Van and Bitlis, Balaban between Bitlis-Siirt, and many other check-points between Van and Ağrı, are witnessing practices that go beyond the 90s and show that the state of emergency is still in place.
In addition to the check-points between cities, there are military and police stations in the city centers and between the neighbourhoods. People are exposed to these practices every day when going home.
People are tired of this constant harassment. Fatma Yılmaz said that control at the check-point in the Çelebibağı District of Erciş district turned into torture and added: "What does a check-point do between neighbourhoods? We are constantly searched in this neighbourhood. There is special attention reserved to young people. I witnessed many people being detained at these check-points. These people live here. There is no reason to stop the same people to check their identity every day. The sole purpose of this check-point is to harass people.”
