More tents on fire in Van - UPDATE

A new earthquake has hit the region of Van today at 12.28. The quake was of 4.1 magnitude.

Bingöl family with seven members lost their tent and all other goods in a fire last night.

The fire in the tent once again broke out from a sparkle of a heating stove and expanded in a short while. The fire was fortunately brought under control with the help of other people as father Þaban Bingöl was quick enough to give the alarm and had enough time to save his children.

Fire brigades came to the place afterwards but the tent of family Bingöl had already become unusable.

Father Bingöl said; “What will I do now outside with five children? We had only a tent which we made by our own means. We were given neither a tent nor something else.”

Three more tents burnt down at the weekend.

The tents belong to Kar, Çiçek and Kaya families turned into ashes, fortunately no loss of lives occurred.

Last week Italian lawyer Mario Angelelli visited Van with a delegation arrived from Italy to attend the trial of Kurdish politicians in Diyarbakir.

Angelelli said they met the BDP mayor of the city, lawyer Bakir Kaya who explained the hard situation the people of Van are living. Not just because of the tragedy of the earthquake which destroyed most houses, but also because of the attitude of the governor (in charge of distributing aids). Indeed the mayor underlined that aids arrived from all over the world but were left to go rotten at the border. And now it is not clear how they are distributed to the population, what is planned to rebuild the city but also how it is planned to get schools working again.

The Italian lawyer also underlined that Kurdish municipalities guarantee at least 30 thousand hot meals per day and have set up 15 tent cities whit washing facilities and small camp hospitals.

Angelelli ended his notes stressing the need for medicines, doctors, nurses, clothes, blankets.
