Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan has been in solitary confinement on the prison island of Imrali since his abduction to Turkey in 1999. The last contact with him was a telephone conversation with his brother in spring 2021, which was interrupted after a few minutes. Öcalan last had contact with his lawyers from the Istanbul-based Asrın Law Office in August 2019. After an eight-year interruption, a hunger strike led by politician Leyla Güven, who has since been imprisoned again, resulted in a total of five visits by lawyers. The last family visit to the island was approved in March 2020. Since then, isolation in the high-security prison has been driven to the level of total incommunicado detention.
Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Şirnak MP Newroz Uysal reacted strongly against the isolation of Abdullah Öcalan.
In her speech on the budget of the Ministry of Justice in the parliament on Thursday, Newroz Uysal reminded that the isolation of Abdullah Öcalan, who has been imprisoned in İmralı Island for 25 years in Turkey, is being deepened and continued.
Evaluating the "National İmralı Policies", Uysal emphasised that the government prevents Abdullah Öcalan's solution reality from reaching the society with these policies.
Defining the isolation in İmralı as the source of lawlessness in Turkey, she stated that this situation has been going on for 25 years and that the state of incommunicado has been deepened.
Newroz Uysal criticised the fact that lawyers are not notified about the disciplinary penalties and bans given to Abdullah Öcalan and noted that Turkey has not implemented the injunction decision taken by the United Nations Human Rights Committee on 6 September 2022.
Newroz Uysal asked why the ECtHR's decision on Abdullah Öcalan has pending for eight years and drew attention to the applications filed by lawyers from all over the world for a meeting with the Kurdish leader.
The MP emphasised that Abdullah Öcalan's ideas are being discussed and embraced in various countries around the world and that Turkey should not ignore this fact.
Uysal called for the lifting of the isolation for the sake of democratisation, peace and freedom in Turkey.
Newroz Uysal emphasised that in order to resolve Turkey's Kurdish question, it is necessary to give voice to Abdullah Öcalan's freedom, not to lawlessness.
Drawing attention to the hunger strikes in prisons, Uysal called for the policies that impoverish Turkey and divide the society to be put aside and for Abdullah Öcalan's solution proposals to be faced.
Newroz Uysal stated: "Dear MPs, put aside the policies that impoverish Turkey, divide and antagonise the society and face the power, voice and truth of Öcalan who said 'I can solve the possibility of peace in a week' (.... ) If you really want to build a common future in this country on the basis of justice, equality and freedom, if you really want to pave the way for democratisation, peace, prosperity, freedom and justice in Turkey, you must eliminate the conditions of absolute isolation, which is a crime against humanity, and each and every one of us must take responsibility for Mr Öcalan to regain his freedom. You are thinking of making a night not only for yourself but for a society, a people, but even in the seven worlds, even in an unknown country whose name you do not even mention today, Öcalan is being discussed, Öcalan is being talked about, Öcalan's ideas are being embraced. We say here that for a real solution, for a real common future, give voice to Mr Öcalan's freedom, to Mr Öcalan's ideas, and end the absolute isolation."
