New arrests in Istanbul against Revolutionary Headquarters

New wave of arrests this morning in Istanbul. Thirteen people were taken into custody following a police operation carried out against the Revolutionary Headquarters, an armed, left-wing organization.

Police seized a large cache of organization-related documents.

Among the premises searched during the operation was the home of Mehmet Sabuncu, the owner of weekly Aydýnlýk, who was detained.

The Revolutionary Headquarters is under trial for few months. Two cases include 57 suspects, including former Police Chief Hanefi Avcý, who are accused of being members of the Revolutionary Headquarters.

The Ýstanbul 12th High Criminal Court in April ruled to merge a trial against 22 suspects, including Avcý, with the main case against the Revolutionary Headquarters at the Ýstanbul 9th High Criminal Court in which suspects stand accused of links to a shootout between police and three Revolutionary Headquarters members at an apartment building in Ýstanbul in April 2009.
