New demonstration law protested in Halabja

More than two thousand Kurds protested the new demonstration law which regulates public gatherings and protest meetings.

By a thin majority, Kurdistan Parliament recently approved a law that regulates demonstrations. People must get government permission prior to staging any demonstration in order to prevent demonstrations from turning chaotic. If the government does not give permission, then the people can file suit in Kurdistan Region High Court, according to the law.

Thousands of protestors gathered today in Halabja city center and protested new regulations on demonstration.

Carrying banners that read “Don’t touch our freedom” protestors called the president of Federal Kurdistan Region Massoud Barzani not to approve the draft law presented by the parliament.

Meanwhile Kurdistan Prime Minister Barham Salih defended the President's decision. "Every country has a law to regulate demonstrations....I know some people are unhappy about some items of the law, but they can discuss them with Parliament."

Regarding the region's demonstration law, demonstrators must ask permission from the region's Ministry of Interior, or in some cases from local administrators like governors and mayors.
