‘New Life’ candidates in Parliament

Despite AKP attacks and obstacles, HDP carried candidates belonging to symbolic families from the Kurdish freedom movement and oppressed faiths and identities into the parliament.

According to unofficial results, Kurdish political movement’s symbolic name Leyla Zana was elected as Ağrı parliamentarian. Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan’s niece Dilek Öcalan entered the parliament from Urfa, and PKK founding member Kemal Pir’s nephew Ziya Pir were elected as Amed parliamentarian.  

İmralı Negotiation Committee member Sırrı Süreyya Önder will now serve as Ankara parliamentarian.

Garo Paylan became the first Armenian parliamentarian as he was elected in İstanbul and Ezidi Feleknas Uca will serve as Amed parliamentarian.

Hüda Kaya from İslamic circles, Turgut Öker from the Alevi movement and Filiz Kerestecioğlu from women’s freedom movement were elected as Istanbul parliamentarians.

Former president of Pir Sultan Abdal Cultural Association Müslüm Doğan was elected as a “New Life” parliamentarian in İzmir.

Human rights activist Seher Akçınar was elected in Erzurum and former Antep mayor who had resigned from CHP and joined HDP was elected as Antep parliamentarian. AKP founder Dengir Mir Mehmet Fırat who had objected to his party’s policies and joined HDP entered the parliament from Mersin, and HDP member and administrator Asiye Kolçak was elected as Bursa parliamentarian.
