Following a Court’s decision proposing the demolition of Emek Cinema in Beyoðlu, Istanbul Culture and Art Variety has announced a protest act against the on 24 December. The Emek Cinema is a symbol of Istanbul intended to be demolished under the name of "urban renewal".
Istanbul Culture and Art Variety notified that the first act will be performed as a press statement on 24 December, Saturday. After gathering at Taksim area at 04:00 p.m., demonstrators will march to Emek Cinema where the press release will be given.
The announcement underlined that demonstrators will continue their protest after the press statement as well and spend the night in front of the Emek Cinema building, performing music, theater and conversations.
calling on people to join the protest, the announcement said that; “This is an emergency call. The demolition of Emek Cinema could start at any time now. In these days, when the democracy, people and cities are left alone by the judiciary, we have no solution but to act with solidarity and struggle on streets! We are coming together to prevent the loss of one more living area and to not to remain silent against the intentions to piece by piece dispossess us of Beyoðlu which is the public sphere of all kinds of struggle.”
Within the scope of the case that Chamber of Architects opened against the project that proposed the demolition of Emek Cinema, Istanbul 9th Administrative Court on 12.05.2010 granted a motion for stay of execution on the grounds that the projected construction plan “could cause irrecoverable damages in case of being realized”.
However, the motion for stay of execution was on December 1 removed by the same court.
