WHO IS VEDAT TÜRKALİ?

He was born in May 13, 1919 in Samsun where he studied until high school. He graduated from Istanbul University Faculty of Arts Department of Turkish Literature in 1942.

He taught literature in Maltepe Military High School and Kuleli Military High School and was arrested in 1951. He was sentenced to 9 years, and was released after the 7th year of his sentence.

He founded Gar Publishing with Rıfat Ilgaz. He wrote his first screenplay, Dolandırıcılar Şahı (King of Swindlers) in 1960. He received the Best Screenplay award in Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival in 1965 with Karanlıkta Uyananlar (Waking Up in the Dark).

He wrote several novels.

He won first prize in Milliyet Publishing’s Novel Competition in 1974 and the Orhan Kemal Novel Grant in 1976. He was awarded with White Gull Literature Honorary Award in 2016.
