Ocalan's Italian lawyer set to become mayor of Milan

Giuliano Pisapia will contest the second turn of the elections to become mayor of Milan after winning the first round. Pisapia is a well known lawyer and served as an independent MP for the left party Rifondazione Comunista. Pisapia has also been part of the defense lawyers college who defend Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan when he arrived in Italy on 14 November 1998. Ocalan was granted political asylum in Italy after he had already left the country.

Pisapia is the centre left candidate in the run to become mayor of Milan. He has defeated the present mayor, right Popolo della Libertà and premier Silvio Berlusconi sponsored, Letizia Moratti.

Pisapia has got 48 per cent of the votes in the first run, leaving Letizia Moratti at 41 per cent. The second round will be in fifteen days time.
