Police staged a crackdown on teachers protesting in Amed against the suspension of thousands of teachers for alleged links to the PKK by an instruction from Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım.
Hundreds of members of the teachers' union Eğitim-Sen gathered in front of Amed Provincial Directorate of National Education to protest the suspension of around 14 thousand teachers for alleged links to the PKK. As many as 4,500 teachers have been suspended within this scope in Amed province alone.
Demonstrators were attacked by police with tear gas and water cannons as they were about to make a statement to the press against the arbitrary suspension of teachers after they were denied access to the Provincial Directorate of National Education.
Teachers chanted “Shoulder to shoulder against fascism” as they were battered by police forces. Riot police deliberately targeted teachers with tear gas canisters.
More than 40 teachers were detained and forced into police vehicles, while the press members covering the demo were also targeted by police and their cameras were broken.
Eğitim Sen Amed Branch Co-chair Nuri Özdemir was heavily battered by police during the crackdown. Özdemir was dragged on the ground and forced into a police vehicle. He was later taken to hospital with an ambulance.
