PACE rapporteurs to visit Turkey for Kavala case

The two rapporteurs will prepare a report after a series of meetings in Turkey. The Council of Europe previously launched infringement proceedings against Ankara due to its failure to implement an ECtHR decision about Kavala.

The Council of Europe will hold talks in Turkey for the first time since businessperson Osman Kavala was sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment and seven other defendants were sentenced to 18 years in prison in the Gezi Park case.

Assigned by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), two rapporteurs will visit Turkey between May 18 and 20, Bianet reported on Monday.

Accordingly, the two PACE members, John Howell from the UK and Boris Cilevis from Latvia, will have several meetings in Turkey.

The infringement proceedings launched against Ankara because of its failure to implement an ECtHR decision about Kavala will also be on the table.

The rapporteurs will convey their observations to the relevant committee on May 24 and later, they will submit a report to PACE.
