Everything is ready in Mersin for the human chain that today will link Mersin to Akkuyu, the site where the Turkish government is planning to build one of the three nuclear plants by the next few years. A human chain 180 Km long to say no to this plan. Organized by Mersin Anti-Nuclear Platform, the demonstration has been prepared for weeks.
“We do not want to witness any new Chernobyl disasters that will bring us debts to be paid for generations, disabled children, cancer, death and a fatal heritage. We do want and ask for clean, cheap and eco-friendly renewable energy without a risk of massive deaths and disasters. Nuclear energy is imposed as a political choice. No energy is more valuable than the lives of people, animals and plants” says the Anti-Nuclear Platform who calls people not to remain silent and so not to be a party to the crime. Today's chain was anticipated by many actions around the city. Theatrical acts and performances aimed to rise awareness about the risks and dangers of the nuclear choice. Musicians and artists supported the protests by going in the streets early in the morning and singing against nuclear power. The platform ,which includes 30 institutions and institutions, is also supported by locals, trade bodies, civil society organizations, artists and civilians young and old alike who demand the government to stop the preparations and to think of the people. Under the slogan "No Nuke" the people today will meet at 30 meeting points to form the long human chain.
