After the grenade explosion next to the military shooting polygon, which killed one child named Oðuzcan Akyürek and injured five other children, the people of Ozalp reacted furiously.

Another eyewitness to the explosion, an 29-year old man, told the mayor of the Ozalp that he too saw a soldier throwing the grenade at the playing children nearby.
