The PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party) Executive Committee issued a written statement regarding May Day. The statement said: "We are approaching a new May Day, which is the day of unity, solidarity and struggle for all workers, oppressed peoples and women in the working class.
As the Kurdish people and movement, we welcome this 1 May together with workers, socialist and democratic forces as well as with our freedom and democracy struggle against the colonial, fascist and genocidal mentality.
We salute 1 May and the workers and laborers, all oppressed, women and youth, who struggle for freedom, democracy and socialism, and wish them great success in their struggles against all kinds of exploitation and oppression."
The statement continued: "We commemorate all martyrs of 1 May with respect and gratitude in the person of Chicago martyrs, 1 May 1977 Taksim martyrs and our martyr guerrilla commander Ramazan Kaplan, and we reiterate our promise to achieve their goals and keep their memories alive."
The PKK also reminded that " The isolation and torture system developed for Leader Apo in Imrali has turned into an isolation and torture system imposed on all women, laborers, peoples and oppressed. And even more so, in these coronavirus times. The society is imprisoned in their houses and the rulers use all sorts of ways to spread their fear to the whole society.
We can realize our goal of democratizing Turkey, the Middle East and the world with the will shown by Leader Apo for 22 years in prison by breaking down the fascist mentality and politics imposed on the entire society with policies namely designed to fight the coronavirus pandemic."
The PKK called on people to "raise the flag of 1 May in every area of unity, solidarity and struggle, to participate in the 1 May celebrations with active and creative styles and methods, to combine the 1 May celebrations with our struggle against isolation, conspiracy and denial."
