Police attack commemoration of Suruç massacre

Thirteen people were detained in Ankara during a police attack on a commemoration of the families of the victims of the Suruç massacre. In Istanbul, police stopped a demonstration and detained six people.

As part of the campaign "Justice for Suruç - Justice for All", families of the victims of the Suruç massacre were set to hold a memorial event for the victims of the massacre on October 10, 2015 in Ankara where 103 peace demonstrators were killed by ISIS suicide bombers. The family members of the 33 young activists murdered in Suruç on July 20, 2015, had attempted to gather at the train station in Ankara. However, they were surrounded by police and pepper-sprayed. In the process, 13 people were taken into custody.

Arrests during commemoration in Istanbul

Another police attack on activists took place in Istanbul. A group of members of the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) and the Federation of Socialist Youth Associations (SGDF) wanted to march to Galatasaray Square to commemorate the Suruç massacre victims and demand justice. Police stopped the demonstration and arrested six activists.

Three major massacres in 2015

With their campaign, the family members demand justice for the victims of the Turkish state's massacres. In 2015, three major attacks on the democratic opposition shook the country. On June 5, 2015, just two days before the parliamentary election, an attack was carried out on a Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) rally in Amed (Diyarbakır), killing five people and injuring hundreds more. This was followed by the Suruç attack and, on October 10, the Ankara train station massacre. All of the attacks were carried out by known jihadists under police surveillance.
