Police attack earthquake victims

Three people have been taken into custody this morning after the violent police attack on earthquake victims. The people gathered outside the collapsed Bayram Hotel to protest against Deputy Prime Minister Beþir Atalay after yesterday’s earthquake in Van. Eight people died in the last quake.

After spending the night outside, people gathered in front of Van Governor´s Office in the early hours of the morning to demand tents and call for governor’s resignation. Demonstrators dispersed after the police attack with pressure water, while Deputy Prime Minister Beþir Atalay arrived to the scene.

Atalay soon after left the scene while reactions increased and no solution was offered. The police then attacked the mass throwing tear gas. Two people were wounded during the clashes. Tension continues in the area.

The Bayram Hotel collapsed last night when a 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck the eastern province of Van, leaving eight dead and more than 20 wounded. The collapsed buildings gave way to voices of anger regarding the lack of precautions the government was expected to take following the previous 7.2-magnitude earthquake that had hit the province only weeks ago, claiming 600 lives.
