Police did once again brutally attack people who gathered in the southern province of Hatay Wednesday evening to protest the unlawful police violence which claimed another life, Ali İsmail Korkmaz, nineteen years old university student who died yesterday. Korkmaz had a brain hemorrhage after he was assaulted by unidentified persons, allegedly including plainclothes policemen, during Gezi protest in Eskişehir on 2 June. He has been receiving treatment at a hospital since the brutal attack he was subject to.
After Korkmaz's death, thousands gathered in Eskişehir in the afternoon to bid farewell to the young boy before he was taken to his hometown Hatay.
A large number of people also gathered in Korkmaz's hometown Wednesday evening, to protest the murder of the late resistance martyr. Police attacked the crowd here as they gathered at Uğur Mumcu Boulevard and started to march to the city center. Hundreds of riot police and dozens of armored vehicles blockaded the way of protestors in the neighborhood of Armutlu. The brutal police attack started as protestors insisted on staging their march. Clashes broke out as demonstrators built barricades and responded to police with stones. Fifteen people were wounded and many others were taken into custody during clashes which lasted till late night.
Korkmaz will be laid to rest in the town of Ekinci today.
Thousands took to the streets yesterday after Korkmaz's death, including Ankara, İstanbul, İzmir, Mersin and Adana. “Mother, do not cry, your children are with you”, they chanted to Korkmaz's mother.
Police denied permission for protests, brutally attacking the Ankara demonstrators in Dikmen where intense clashes between police and protestors lasted till midnight.
Police also surrounded the crowd in Mersin, denying them permission to march to protest the brutal police attack.
In the meantime, a member of the SDP (Socialist Democracy Party) was taken into custody following house raids in the southern province of Adana early Thursday morning. The woman, Su Kütük, has reportedly been detained for joining Gezi protests in the city. The number of detainees is expected to increase.
With the death of Korkmaz, the number of Gezi protestors killed by police has risen to four, with three others being Abdullah Cömert (22, Antakya), Ethem Sarısülük (26, Ankara), Mehmet Ayvalıtaş (20, Istanbul).
Gezi protestors across the city have been violently attacked by police since mass demonstrations began early June. Some ten thousand people have been wounded as a result of violent attacks. Police are also arresting Gezi protestors in mass since mid June, carrying out simultaneous house raids at dawn and searching the houses of people in detail.
