A police officer in Çeşme district, in the western province of İzmir, killed himself in front of Çeşme Courthouse on Saturday.
37 year-old policeman, Erol Benzer, was critically injured at the scene after he committed a suicide using his own police gun. He was rushed to Atatürk Research and Training Hospital where he however lost his life soon later.
Benzer, married and father of one, has been on temporary duty at Çeşme Courthouse for some time.
It came out that the police officer had written the followings on the facebook page Polis Kürsüsü (Police Platform) before he killed himself;
“I am killing myself in front of Çeşme Courthouse to ensure the recognition of the fact that police officers also have the right to live and work under proper conditions, and to ensure the ending of further police suicides. I hope our voice will be heard and you, my colleagues whom I am leaving behind, are granted with the basic rights you deserve. I am sorry for leaving my 71 year-old mother, my nine year-old son and my friends alone but I have no doubt that my colleagues will protect the values I am leaving behind”.
Members of the facebook page tried to convince the policeman but couldn't succeed as they heard about Benzer's suicide five minutes later. The page published the news using the title "Another suicide, another pain".
Some ten policemen are said to have committed suicide since the beginning of Gezi protests.
