Polls open in Syria as Kurds boycott referendum

People have began to go to the polls to vote in a referendum for the new constitution in Syria which aims to end the political crisis and conflicts in the country. However, the referendum is boycotted by the opposition, Kurds in particular, who don’t find the new constitution proposal sufficient.

Around 14,6 million voters will go to polls today for the referendum which has been worked on by a commission appointed by Syrian President Bashar al Assad .

The new constitution restricts the seven-year duty term of the President with two times while it however doesn’t make it clear concerning the re-election of Assad when his duty term ends in 2014. On the other hand, the new constitution doesn’t propose a solution to the basic problems of the country, the Kurdish issue in particular.

Still, the Baas regime hopes to end the current political crisis in the country with this new constitution.

In a statement to ANF, PYD President Saleh Muhammad remarked that “the new constitution doesn’t propose anything for Kurds”.

Besides Kurds, the referendum on the new constitution is also boycotted by the West-supported Syrian National Council which describes the new constitution as ‘nonsense’ and the referendum as a ‘deceiving’.

According to the reports coming through from West Kurdistan, the majority of the people boycotts the referendum, intensely in the regions of Aleppo, Qamislo and Efrin that are densely populated by Kurds.
