Portrait of Mülkiye Birtane, candidate in Kars

We publish an edited version of the interview with independent candidate for Kars Mülkiye Birtane first published in DIHA News Agency.

The first woman nominated candidate in Kars, Freedom, Democracy and Labor Block Independent Candidate Mülkiye Birtane, is shown a remarkable interest by citizens for whom the block candidates are the one and only hope as the Kars city was not represented in the Parliament in the previous period and remained as an "invisible city".

Freedom, Democracy and Labor Block Independent Candidate Mülkiye Birtane will be competing with the AKP, CHP, MHP and SP at the general elections on June 12. During Birtane’s visit to the unions, associations, opinion leaders, craftsmen and laborers, the main demands of people are expressed as the guarantee of a peaceful environment in Turkey, termination of the war and solution to the city’s main problems such as unemployment, stock breeding and factory problems. Birtane stated that she will work in order to bring the city to the status it deserves.

Expressing that the AKP government didn’t live up to the promises it had given in the last election period, tradesmen trust the block’s candidates as they witnessed how the candidates worked and got into touch with the people during the former election process. They believe that Mülkiye Birtane will turn a hand to their problems and solve them.

‘The Block is the only hope for revealing the socialist soul in Kars’

Concerning the coming elections, the directors of the 78’s Union in Kars, consisting mainly Azerbaijanis and Terekemes, say the followings; “Although known with the Left and Democratic identity since the past, the Kars city was driven apart from this identity after the 80 military coup. The Labor, Democracy and Freedom Block is a chance for the city to meet its identity again.

Only the strong rise of the block candidates can enable the constitutional guarantee of the rights and freedoms of different ethnical and belief circles and the representation of Kars on a democratic constitution as deserved. Therefore, our union supports Mülkiye Birtane and ensures active participation in the electoral activities. Independent candidates are a new hope for us.”

77 year-old Ali Bocnak from the Bekiran tribe expressed the reason of his support to Independent Candidate Birtane as follows; “The Kurdish people have protected the religion of Mohammed at all times. The holy religion, religious places and mosques now became the propaganda grounds of the government which has turned these places into false religion centers. It is now Labor Democracy and Freedom Block’s turn to change the situation. They have showed us that the true Islam doesn’t defend violence and that sermons are written according to the Quran, not the government. They have started the Civil Friday Prayer against those who cannot achieve this. The task of the block is hard but meaningful. That is why we support our candidate Birtane.”
