Prison population in Turkey increased by 14%

Steady increase in prison population, said TurkStat.

Turkish Statistic Institute (TurkStat) has released prison figures for 2018. According to the figures on 31 December 2018, the prison population in Turkey was 264,842, 14-percent more than the previous year.

78.9 percent of those held in prison on 31 December 2018 were convicted while 21.1 percent were remanded in custody. 96.1 percent of the prison population were men and 3.9 percent women.

188 out of every 100, 000 people were in prison in Turkey in 2013, a figure that increased to 288in 2017 and 323 in 2018.

In the case of prisoners convicted for more than one crime, 17 percent of convicts received into prison between 1 January and 31 December 2018, committed theft, 12.4 percent committed assault, 6.7 percent production and trade of drugs, 5.8 percent opposition to the Bankruptcy and Enforcement Law and 3.5 percent homicide.
