Prisoner with cancer on hunger strike

Erol Zavar, who is currently in Sincan F Type prison and has been diagnosed with cancer, has gone on hunger strike to protest against cameras on prison garden where prisoners have their air. Zavar says the cameras are a violation of human rights of prisoners.

Political prisoner Deniz Bakır has joined the hunger strike.

Some 60 prisoners were being held in isolation since 6 November for protesting security cameras placed in the prison garden.

Contemporary Lawyers' Association's Ankara Branch had said prisoners broke the security cameras in the garden after obtaining no result from the applications they filed to the prison administration and the Ministry of Justice against the security cameras which they described as an isolation and an intervention in private life.

Following the protest, prison officers and soldiers raided all wards on 6 November, assaulted some 60 prisoners who were later put in one person cells, also denied permission to take their things with them. They are being held there for the last nine days.
