Peace and Democracy Party's report on prison conditions in Turkey shows that ill treatment and torture are still widespread despite Turkish government's claims.
The BDP deputies visited prisons in Adana, Ýstanbul/Bakýrköy, Bolu, Diyarbakir, Erzurum, Mardin, Tekirdag and Trabzon prisons in the last 12 months.
The BDP envoy reported that in Tekirdag, Erzurum, Midyat and Adana the prisoners meals are not sufficent and are punished with less meals frequently. The prices of the meals in the prison's canteens are ridicolousy high in all prisons and no special menu was given to terminally ill prisoners in contradiction with the prison law.
In Tekirdag and Erzurum prisons, prisoners have limited access to hot water (Tekirday 2 hours perweek, Erzurum 3 days per week) and BDP enyov reported the hygen conditions in both prisons are worrisome.
On allegations about inter-prisoner relations there are also serious violations in Tekirdag and Diyarbakir. In Tekirdag prison prisoners from different cells are only allowed to see each other for 7 hours in a month althoug the prison regulations set this social hours to 10 in a week.
In Diyarbakir the situation is even worse. Some prisoners never saw each other although they are kept in the same prison for years.
BDP envoys reported that in Bolu, Adana, Bakirkoy prisons the social hours are strictly restricted.
According to the report almost in all of the prisons there are claims about restrictions on meetings with family members and lawyers. In Tekirdag, Erzurum, Trabzon and Midyan prisoners said that the letters they send to their relatives are not posted and they can't receive letters.
The prisoners are denied of basic right to get an adequate medical treatment in continuously denied for political prisoners the report said.
