Publisher Zarakolu applied to European Court of Human Rights

International publisher and Nobel Prize nominee Ragýp Zarakolu who is in prison for 120 days has applied to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). The rights violations under custody and the prevention of lawyers’ access to the case file due to the ‘secrecy decision’ were presented in the petition.

Zarakolu was jailed along with Prof. Büþra Ersanlý and 22 others in the scope of the same KCK (Kuridstan Communities Union) operation. Zarakolu’s lawyers Özcan Kýlýç and Azize Deniz Taþdemir noted that the rights violations and the prevention of lawyers’ access to the case file were contrary to the European Convention on Human Rights. The petition written to the ECHR also mentioned that the objections to Zarakolu’s arrest due to his courses in the Politics Academy of the legal Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) had been rejected 13 days later and argued that Zarakolu’s arrest was unlawful and ungrounded.
