Putin and Erdoğan agree on a ceasefire in Idlib

In the conflict over the northern Syrian province of Idlib, the presidents of Russia and Turkey have agreed on a ceasefire, a security corridor and joint patrols on the M4 motorway.

Russia and Turkey have agreed on a new ceasefire in the Turkish-backed Jihadist occupied Idlib province in northwestern Syria. The “suspension of all military activities” will come into force at 00:01 Friday night, it was announced after a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Moscow on Thursday.

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced to reporters that both countries also agreed on a security corridor along the M4 road. The corridor covers an area 6 km north and six kilometers south of the strategically important motorway. Joint patrols along the route are to take place from 15 March.

According to the agreement, patrols on the M4 will begin from the settlement of Trumba west of the Saraqib town and continue to Ain al-Havr. The point marks the border with the area controlled by the Syrian regime.

The defence ministers of Russia and Turkey will agree on the parameters of the corridor within a week.
