Commenting on the recent hanging in Iran of 4 Kurdish members of PJAK (Party of Free Life of Kurdistan) and 1 other political prisoner, the president of Kongra-Gel, Remzi Kartal, said that "the Kurdish people and the Kurdish liberation movement will not remain in silence". On Sunday 9 May it was announced that a total of 5 political prisoners had been hanged in Evin prison in the capital Terhan. Four of the prisoners, Ferzad Kemanger, Eli Heyderiyan, Ferhad Wekili, and women activist Þirin Elem Hulu were member of PJAK. The fifth prisoner was Mehdi Eslamian of the Tondar organisation. Since 2007 the Iranian regime has hanged a total of 7 members of PJAK, but 18 Kurdish political prisoners are waiting in the death row. Four of those to date are missing. The first member of PJAK to be hanged was Hasan Hikmet Demir, in 2007. Then, on 11 November 2009 it was Ihsan Fetahiyan to be hanged and on 6 January, Fesih Yasemini.
According to a report by Amnesty International in 2009 the Iranian regime has hanged at least 388 people. After the controversial victory by president Mahmud Amadinejad, on 12 June 2009, at least 112 people have been killed in an eight weeks period since 5 August.
The president of Kongra Gel, Remzi Kartal, underlined in his statement that not only "Kongra Gel strongly condemn and protest against the violent behaviour of the Iranian government towards the Kurdish and the PJAK prisoners", but also pointed out that "the policy by the Iranian government is in violation of international law, democracy, human rights, and religious beliefs". Kartal then stated that "the Iranian government is executing Kurdish political prisoners behind closed doors, away from media and any observer". In his final remarks Remzi Kartal said that "the Kurdish Liberation Movement keeps sending peace messages to the Iranian government, which however pretends not to understand nor hear these messages, its only answer being executions".
