Repression of independent press continues

More than 20 young people have been arrested this morning in an operation carried out by anti terror police in Sakarya. Among the people arrested also DIHA journalist Cagdas Kaplan.

In a separate incident a second DIHA journalist, Murat Altunoz, has been taken into custody for a couple hours and threatened. He was 'invited' not to continue working for DIHA.

In recent months free and independent press is under heavy pressure. Journalists are being arrested and often sentenced, like is the case of Vedat Kursun, former editor of the newspaper Azadiya Welat, recently sentenced to 166 years of prison.

As for Murat Altunoz, he has been taken into custody while on duty at Mustafa Kemal University. According to his statement, he has been beaten by university’s security and then threatened by gendarmerie.

Altunoz was on duty at University where students have boycott to protest administration. Disturbances occurred between security forces and students. Altunoz was prevented from recording and police tried to take his camera. He has then been taken into a gendarmerie’s car when he refused to give up his camera. He was released after two hours.
