Istanbul police have attacked people joining the celebrations for the Republic Day.

Hundreds of people led by the Youth Union of Turkey (TGB) were prevented by police as they started to march to the central Taksim Square on Tuesday afternoon.

After surrounding the mass with riot control vehicles, police attacked the people with tear gas and pressure water.
Many were effected by the police force, including an old woman who fainted, and nine were taken into custody. Tension continues at Galatasaray Square.
