Roma children in segregated classrooms

A separate class was set off for Roma children in Kumburgaz Primary School in Istanbul. According to the information obtained by DIHA News Agency, break times was also arranged separately for these children in order to prevent them from getting together with others who are not Roma.

Referring to news published in the website ‘www.jiyan.org’ DIHA reports that eight students in the school were taken to a different class to isolate them from non-Roma children at the same school.

The school manager Sanlý Gökmen justified the situation as a special need for students who are older than the regular students attending primary school.

Prime Minister Erdogan had last year organized a special day dedicated to Roma people. The government had presented the so called Roma Opening, a package of proposals aimed at ending discrimination of Roma people. At that meeting one of the most pressing requests from young Roma was indeed to be able to get into education.
