Seven students arrested for alleged “membership to an organization”

Following detentions in Ankara, Denizli, Eskiþehir and Bolu the night before with the instruction of Special Authorized Public Prosecutor of Ankara, seven students were brought to Ankara Public Prosecution Office at early morning hours yesterday. Interrogated by the Prosecutor here, students were sent to Ankara Court with an arrest demand on charges of being members of THKP/C (Turkish People Liberation Army) Resistance Movement.

Ankara 12th High Criminal Court Vacation Judicature in the same day ruled arrest for all seven suspects.

One other trial of university students was held in Zonguldak. Among two students who were tried for the same reason, opening a banner, one was justified and the other was punished by a pecuniary penalty. The banner which wrote “Neither students can be doomed to paid education nor coal miners to death” was opened in a protest act staged by students against Prime Minister Erdoðan during opening ceremonies he attended in Zonguldak on May 8.

Six students were taken into custody after this protest act. Four were released after detentions and two were punished by a pecuniary penalty. The court, while accepting the objection of one of these students and considering the act as a democratic right and demand, imposed 154 TL fine on the other one.
