Seventy-year-old woman jailed for carrying a banner

Raife Inatçı is 70 years old. She lives in Silvan, province of Amed, and she has been sentenced to more than 3 years for carrying a banner during a march.

Raife Inatçı, who lives in Karacalar neighborhood in Amed's Silvan district , is accused of carrying a banner during a march she participated to on 2 December 2009.

The investigation was opened for a banner Itançı who is illiterate was carrying at the march and that was supporting the young "Apocular".

The old woman was detained in 2009 and released. However, a lawsuit was later filed against her for "making propaganda for an illegal organization" and "committing a crime on behalf of the organization although not being a member of the organization".

Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 6 sentenced the old woman to 3 years and 1 month and 15 days of imprisonment.

The Supreme Court of Appeal upheld the local court's sentence.

After this, Inatçı, a mother of 7 children, was taken into custody on 27 August and sent to Diyarbakır D Type Closed Prison.

Relatives said that the woman suffers from many health problems due to her age, and are very worried about the effect prison can have on her.
