Sivas massacre trial postponed to next year

The trial of seven fugitive suspects of Sivas massacre has continued at Ankara 11th High Criminal Court today.

In 1993, 35 intellectuals died in a fire set by an Islamist mob during an Alevi culture festival.

Basing on the report of Forensic Medicine Institute, lawyer of victims’ families, Þenal Sarýhan, has stated that one of the chief suspects Cafer Erçakmak, who has recently died and buried in Sivas as fugitive, wasn’t put through a DNA test after the discovery of his death. Blood samples were rather taken from the son and wife of Erçakmak.

Public Prosecutor Hakan Yüksel demanded to be given the file of DNA test. The court accepted Yüksel’s demand and adjourned the trial to 13 March 2012.

“If we face the truth of this and other cases, many senior AKP members, ministers and deputies, will land in the suspect’s seat. That’s why the AKP is scared,” Sýrrý Süreyya Önder of the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) said after meeting with the victims’ relatives.
