Sixteen BDP mayors in prison

Following the arrest today of Esendere mayor Hurþit Altekin, the number of BDP mayor in prison rose to 16.

Altekin was taken into custody this morning following raids at different premises carried out by police within the scope of the so called KCK (Kurdish Communities Union) operation, in Yüksekova and Esendere districts.  

Political operations within the scope of so-called “KCK” operations were launched following the municipal elections on 29 March 2009 when Democratic Society Party (DTP) increased the number of its mayors from 57 to 98. After the closure of the Kurdish DTP, the figures on the detention and arrest of BDP mayors increased more and more since 14 April 2009.  The latest “KCK” operation was made in Hakkari where security forces raided a number of houses in Yüksekova and Esendere districts with the instruction of Van Special Authorized Public Prosecution Office. Among those arrested within the scope of this operation are also Esendere Mayor Hurþit Altekin and Yüksekova former Mayor Ruken Yetiþkin. 16 mayors of the BDP have been arrested so far since the beginning of “KCK” operations.

The names of the mayors in prisons are as follows; Derik Mayor Çaðlar Demirel, Þýrnak Mayor Ramazan Uysal, Cizre Mayor Aydýn Budak, Silopi Mayor Emin Toðurlu, Esendere Mayor Hurþit Altekin, Yüksekova former Mayor Ruken Yetiþkin, Batman Mayor Nejdet Atalay, Kayapýnar Mayor Zülküf Karatekin, Balveren Mayor Abdurrezak Yýldýz, Daðpýnar Mayor Ayhan Erkmen, Kýzýltepe Mayor Ferhan Türk, Ýdil Mayor Resul Sadak, Iðdýr Mayor Mehmet Nuri Güneþ, Suruç Mayor Ethem Þahin, Viranþehir Mayor Leyla Güven and  Baþkale Mayor Ýhsan Güler.
