Solidarity with Öcalan in Thuringia

At a meeting in Thuringia, internationalists expressed their solidarity with Abdullah Öcalan and called for his release.

The Rebellious Gathering, a networking camp organized by the Ya Basta Network and Network of Rebellion, will be held from 28 July to 4 August this year in Waltershausen in Thuringia. The annual camp is a meeting place for people from various internationalist movements.

The current situation of Abdullah Öcalan and his solitary confinement, which violated all international conventions protecting the rights of prisoners, will also be discussed, said the organizers of the meeting, adding: "Abdullah Öcalan has been in solitary confinement on the prison island of Imrali since 15 February 1999. He has been denied contact with the outside world for 28 months. Requests for visits are repeatedly denied on various pretexts and new 'disciplinary measures' are repeatedly imposed on him.

Ever since it became known in November that Öcalan did not take part in a personal interview when a delegation from the Anti-Torture Committee (CPT) visited Imrali and that the report was still being withheld from the public, concerns about his health have been growing."

The organizers continued: "Abdullah Öcalan's isolation conditions are unique in the world and it shows that the capitalist states are very afraid of his power. Abdullah Öcalan is imprisoned as a representative of the Kurdish freedom movement. He has a key role when it comes to peace in the Middle East. Since 1993, he has repeatedly called for a unilateral ceasefire, which has repeatedly been broken by Turkey. We as internationalists, who have come together here at this camp, show our very clear solidarity with Abdullah Öcalan and demand his physical liberation! Because this cannot be separated from peace in Kurdistan and worldwide."
