Spain reopens some non-essential business today amidst criticism

Despite recording a new high in the daily death toll from the coronavirus, the Spanish government has confirmed that as of today some non-essential businesses will start their activities again.

On Sunday there were 619 deaths according to figures released by the Health Ministry. This represents a rise from the 510 deaths recorded on Saturday, which was the lowest number of overnight deaths since 23 March when there were 462 fatalities.

The number of new infections has fallen. Total confirmed infections now stand at 166,019, with an extra 4,167 in the last 24 hours – which represents a drop of 663 on Saturday’s figures.

Non-essential businesses were placed in a temporary period of “hibernation” on 30 March. These include companies from the industrial and construction sectors that closed for two weeks as the government tightened confinement measures in a bid to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

The lockdown will remain in place until 26 April, confirmed the government, although the decision to reopen a number of businesses has been highly criticized including by scientists warming a possible return to the darker days of the epidemic.

A total of 16,972 people have died in Spain from Covid-19 since the beginning of the outbreak although it is widely believed that the real number of dead is much higher.
