Stand by Kurdish people, say Kurdish artists

In a statement for the forthcoming Newroz [Kurdish New Year, 21 March], Koma Berxwedan and the European Initiative of Kurdish Artists called on all artists to stand by Kurdish people in this historical and critical period and to join the freedom halay (Anatolian folk dance) where Newroz will be celebrated.

Referring to the police operations carried out by the Turkish state against political and cultural Kurdish istitutions, the statement pointed out that the Kurdish people’s values defended with great effort, labor and fair struggle would not easily be detained through deception, pressure, constraint and unlawful implementations.

The statement, remarking that the Kurdish people, like all other nations, have the right to live with their universal rights including history, culture, language and art, said the followings:

“The sovereign Turkish state is carrying out a slaughter and assimilation policy against our people, art, language and all values in the current process. The Turkish state has shown its real face once more by detaining Kurdish politicians, democrats, journalists, lawyers, mayors and artists. The fact that the U.S. and Europe would raise their voice should the same thing happened in another country shows the strength and boldness that the ruling AKP gets from these powers in denying the universal rights of the Kurdish people and resorting to all possible ways to eliminate the Kurdish struggle for freedom and democracy.”

Millions of Kurdish people will no doubt continue to take to the streets to resist against the denial and destruction policies of the AKP government which, still hungry for slaughtering Kurds, aims to a total elimination by blocking the Kurdish liberation movement, underlined the statement.

“This spring should turn into the freedom spring of the Kurdish people”, said Kurdish artists, noting that they believe 2012 spring will bring victory and defeat the dirty plans of the AKP state.

Pointing out to the arrest of Kurdish artists and organizers before this year’s Newroz celebrations, the statement emphasized that the Kurdish people would this year all together take to the streets and turn places where Newroz is going to be celebrated into freedom zones.

“Politics under the leadership of Öcalan bears ideology and free thought”, underlined the statement and remarked that all Kurdish artists should act united showing sensitivity to this critical and important process.

Emphasizing that the people expected artists to build a noble art by fulfilling their historical role, the statement ended with the following call:

“With these hopes, we call on all Kurdish artists to be aware of AKP’s dirty policies and to resist by joining the freedom of halay and singing freedom songs under the leadership of our immortal resistance comrades. We call on all Kurdish artists to raise their voices and stand by the struggle carried out to achieve freedom and democratic rights.”
