Students from Boğaziçi University: All trustees must go

Students from Boğaziçi University took to the streets in Istanbul Kadıköy on Friday to protest against the trustees appointed by the regime through universities and city administrations.

Even after the dismissal of the rector of Istanbul's Boğaziçi University, Melih Bulu, who was appointed in January by presidential decree, the protests of the students continue. On Friday, students took to the streets chanting “All trustees must go”, “The universities are ours” and “Bye, Bye Melih”.

In addition to the students, many representatives of civil society took part in the demonstration, including HDP MPs Dersim Dağ and Musa Piroğlu, as well as the chairwoman of the HDP Provincial Association of Istanbul, Elif Bulut.

"Bulu was deposed because he was unable to break the resistance"

In the name of Boğaziçi Solidarity, Beha Yıldız said that Melih Bulu was the last victim of the government crisis. She was alluding to the fact that Melih Bulu, who was appointed as trustee rector by Erdoğan at Boğaziçi University, was removed from office a few days ago once again by presidential decree. Bulu was deposed because he was unable to break the resistance of the students, said Yıldız and added: “The frustration of the ruling anti-democratic system was dumped on him. Whoever wants to continue to be a servant of this system should look closely at the fate of Melih Bulu. Of course, we know that these presidential decrees achieved absolutely nothing for democracy. Indeed, it was by a presidential decree that the withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention for the Protection of Women from Violence and the exclusion of academics for peace from the university, were imposed. We are also aware that we cannot get rid of trustees in the universities without getting rid of trustees appointed in the HDP-run municipalities."

The student representative pointed to the repression at the universities by the University Council (YÖK) and said that the regime is still trying to control all segments of society and is also continuing the repression at Boğaziçi University. Yıldız called for justice for the massacres of the regime and its mercenaries and freedom for the students detained.

She concluded her statement with the words: “We no longer want to deal with the servants of the regime, the recipients of orders from private security services or the police; we want to settle accounts with the politically responsible of this regime. We want to address the problems of everyone in this country, unite behind these words and thus lay a stone on the path of the united and independent struggle of the workers and the oppressed. So until all trustees, not just at Boğaziçi University, have disappeared, we will continue our struggle, we will continue to fight."
