Sweden’s Örebro City Council: “End the invasion of Afrin”

Örebro city mayor and municipal commissioners condemned the Turkish state bombings and invasion and stated that they stand in solidarity with the people of Afrin and YPG/YPJ forces.

Örebro City Council administrators from various political parties came together to condemn Turkey’s bombings and invasion in Afrin, standing next to each other with signs that read “AFRIN”, and read a press statement.

Mayor of Örebro Kenneth Nilsson from the Social Democratic Workers’ Party and municipal commissioners Murad Artin from the Left Party, Lennart Bondeson from the Christian Democrats, Per-Ake Sörman from the Center Party and Sara Richert from the Greens said the Kurdish, Assyrian-Syriac-Chaldean, Arab, Êzidî and Armenians living together in the district have been harmed by the Turkish state bombing Afrin and that many civilians have lost their lives.

Municipal commissioners stated that in Örebro there are many relatives of people suffering in Afrin, and they are holding protests to condemn the Turkish state: “That is why, we as the administration have a duty towards our fellow citizens to help them in this time of need.”

Municipal commissioners thanked the YPG/YPJ for stopping ISIS gangs and continued:

“Many groups including Turkey have used the conflict in Syria and Iraq for their own political interests. But thousands of women and men (YPJ and YPG) have fought not only for their lives, but the lives of others as well. Turkey’s attacks against the enemies of the Islamic State creates a risk that thse terrorist groups will create a society of fear once more.”

The commissioners stated that for the reasons listed, 5 municipal administrators from various parties demand the Swedish government and parliament take the matter to the United Nations and the Euopean Union so the invasion in Afrin will end and people can return to their lands.
