Talks continue in Turkey following Abdullah Öcalan’s February 27 ‘Call for Peace and Democratic Society’ and the PKK's decision to disband and disarm, announced on May 12.
In a statement on May 28, following a meeting with MHP (Nationalist Movement Party) Chairman Devlet Bahçeli, Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş said, “From now on, it is the duty of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey to ensure that this process reaches its conclusion in a transparent manner, before the eyes of our nation, and in accordance with the plan.” Kurtulmuş remarked that a commission comprising representatives of all political parties in Parliament must be established to monitor, control, and lead the process.
Kurtulmuş met with CHP Chairman Özgür Özel in Parliament on Friday. Speaking after the meeting, Kurtulmuş said that they expected the CHP to contribute to the process.
Özgür Özel expressed their support for the establishment of a commission under the umbrella of the Parliament and stated the following:
"We attach great importance to a Turkey that is both free of terrorism and democratic. We have been consistent on this issue throughout history. We have always said that this issue should be pursued by a parliamentary commission seeking social consensus. We now consider it extremely important that a commission of this kind is to be established in Parliament. The most important point to be understood in this regard is how the commission will operate. We have shared our thoughts on this matter, and we will continue to do so in the coming process."
“No process that does not include the parliament will be successful,” said Özel and added: “In order to achieve social consensus, we consider it very important to obtain the consent of the families of martyrs, veterans, and everyone who has been harmed by these processes. From now on, the CHP will contribute to every effort made under the umbrella of the parliament.”
