Taliban: Turkey’s decision is against our national interests

The Taliban has warned Ankara against deployment of Turkish troops in Afghanistan.

The Taliban made a statement a few hours after a Turkish government statement said that Turkish troops would secure the Kabul Airport.

“The decision of the Turkish rulers is not appropriate, it is a violation of our sovereignty and territorial integrity and is against our national interests,” the Taliban said.

Ankara's decision came following a meeting on the sidelines of the NATO summit between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and US President Joe Biden in Brussels in June.

However, the Taliban rejects Ankara's proposal and wants Turkey to withdraw within the framework of a 2020 agreement between the Taliban and the United States.

The Taliban said on Saturday that foreign forces should not strive for a military presence in Afghanistan, noting that the security of embassies and the airport was the responsibility of the Afghans.

TALIBAN EXPANDS FOOTHOLD IN AFGHANISTAN

In the meantime, since the US officially began to withdraw in May, the Taliban forces have expanded its foothold in the country faster than anticipated.

The Taliban has taken control of many districts in recent weeks without waiting for a full withdrawal of the US forces.

The border crossings to Tajikistan and Iran also fell into the hands of the Taliban. The American troops will complete the withdrawal by August 31.

The Taliban, which captured the Panjwayi district in Kandahar province on Sunday, claimed in a statement on July 9 that they had seized 85 percent of Afghanistan's soils. However, this information has not been confirmed by independent sources.

Security measures at the Kabul Airport have also been increased. On July 11, a defence system was installed against rockets and missiles.
