CHP Deputy Chairman Sezgin Tanrýkulu did not hide his worries about President Abdullah Gül vowing “great revenge” for the attacks around Hakkari in which some 20 to 26 soldiers and security forces died.
Speaking to ANF, Tanrýkulu remarked that this discourse could be misused by those stirring up nationalist feelings in the current process when anger got this high.
Tanrýkulu stated that Prime Minister Erdoðan is attempting to cover up his own responsibility by putting the blame on the BDP (Peace and Democracy Party), adding; “We have come to the final exit before the bridge. There is no other chance but the Parliament working to create an environment for the solution to the conflict.”
Tanrýkulu underlined that the statement by the President is not appropriate for a politician who represents the unity and integrity of the society and added: “In a period when polarization and anger has increased, the duty of the president is to act with common sense, not emotionally and to express that the solution will be found in the framework of democracy. He shouldn’t forget that his words can be used to justify dangerous acts on streets. Therefore, the President should use words that will hold all citizens and the whole society together.”
As for Prime Minister Erdogan targeting the BDP in each speech he makes, Tanrýkulu emphasized that “The history has shown us that the Kurdish issue can’t find a solution on the axis of security and revenge discourses. Nobody needs to bury his head in the sand because this reality was understood by everyone.”
Tanrýkulu underlined that “The solution is to be found in the Parliament. It would be the beginning of a positive development if we can establish a commission in the Parliament to handle and discuss the Kurdish issue in details.”
Tanrýkulu also said that the media shouldn’t help in provoking a war and noted that the media should draw a clear boundary between informing the public and speeches of hate. “The media should take advantage of freedom to receive and convey information but it should at the same time carefully abstain from making coments that lead to discrimination and hate. Otherwise, it will only add fuel to the flame.”
