Turkish police stormed several apartments in Mersin in the Thursday morning hours and detained at least ten members of the leftist party TÖP. The detainees were taken to the Mersin police headquarters. A secrecy order has been imposed on the proceedings, so nothing has yet been learned about the reason for the arrests.
The Social Freedom Party (TÖP) was only founded in 2020 and advocates a democratic, egalitarian and just society. It shows solidarity with the Kurds and opposes the oppression of the Alevis. Other important points for the party are the fight against femicide, the change of working conditions and the fight against environmental destruction.
