The hearing of the case on the death of 13 year old Ahmet Yıldız in an unlicensed plastic factory was held at Adana 6th Criminal Court of First Instance on Tuesday.
The boy who was illegally employed in an unlicensed plastic factory in Adana died on 14 March 2013 after he got stuck in a press machine and couldn't get out of it.
The court which had earlier condemned the factory owner Ali Koç to up to six years in prison on charges of reckless killing reduced the sentence to 4 years and two months, applying an abatement of “good conduct” in trials.
The court board later changed the imprisonment into a fine in consideration of the employer's having a profession and family and this regret over the incident.
Employer Koç was released on conditions of paying 30 thousand 40 TL, by 24 monthly installments of 20 TL per day, to the family of the boy.
In a statement condemning the court's decision, Gündem Association for Children pointed out that the incident was not an accident or "negligence" but a work killing.
The Association which has also appealed against the court ruling called on everyone to raise their voice against work killings and to follow the case.
The statement said that "According to the 2012 Report on the Right to Life of Gündem Association for Children, at least 38 children lost their life in work killings in 2012 alone. The reason for this critical consequence is the fact that those responsible for work killings are subjected no punishment or deterrent sentences, just like what we have witnessed in the case of 13 year old Ahmet whose life they valued 30.040 TL..."
The Association demanded the initiation of policies aimed at ending the child labor and punishment of those responsible for work killings.
