Thirty two people taken into custody

Thirty two people have been taken into custody this morning as a result of a new police operation carried out in 17 cities.

Police carried out raids on 103 addresses and thirty two people have been detained although it has emerged police actually have an arrest warrant for 45 people.

House raids and searches at different party and union buildings have been carried out in Adana, Ankara, Ýstanbul, Mersin, Bingöl, Ýzmir, Batman, Diyarbakýr, Siirt, Urfa, Aðrý, Muþ, Van and Mardin.

The new operation, carried out in the context of the so called KCK (Kurdish Communities Union) operation, targeted the BDP but also public workers union KESK, human rights association IHD, Kurdi-Der, Tuhay-Der, councils and media.

The Ankara house of Leyla Zana MP has also been raided by police. Among the people taken into custody are former DEHAP chair and BDP executive Tuncer Bakýrhan, BDP co-vice president and former MP Fatma Kurtulan and DÝHA News Agency journalist Murat ÇÝftçi.
